It's About Time. Popcaan Would Be The Marquee Dancehall Concert In Kenyan History Thus Far

Popcaan Coming To Kenya
The Axlerator

For years, Kenyan dancehall fans have had a complicated relationship with the words ‘Popcaan’ and ‘Kenya.’

The Jamaican star has been linked to a Kenyan appearance more than once. A Nairobi appearance was announced for 2022, again raising expectations that the Unruly boss would finally make his Kenyan debut. Unfortunately promoter breach of contract from Vibes only stopped Nairobi from witnessing the dancehall superstar

So when one particular name starts appearing around conversations about a major Nairobi festival in 2027, it is difficult not to pay attention.

Popcaan.

Now, before anyone starts booking flights, there is a catch.

Nothing official has been announced.

At least, not yet.

One of Nairobi’s newer festival properties @thevybzfest has been quietly building toward a major March 2027 event, with dancehall, Afrobeats, reggae and Kenya’s sounds all forming part of the musical picture.

The festival is Vybz Fest, scheduled for Easter weekend 27 March 2027 in Nairobi.

Its website www.thevybzfest.com currently keeps the headliner firmly under wraps, simply displaying TBA.

And that has naturally led to the question:

Who exactly are they keeping secret?

There are plenty of names that could make sense. But Popcaan is the one that would immediately explain why the festival has chosen to keep its cards close to its chest. Given the circus around another dancehall superstar Vybz Kartel supposed performances in Kenya, it’s safe to say he is not the artist they are keeping close to their chest. They put in their bio ‘Guess who, and no it’s Not Vybz Kartel’ perhaps because the festival name may suggest it 🤷🏽‍♂️

The timing would also make sense.

Popcaan remains one of dancehall’s most recognisable international artists, with a catalogue that has travelled far beyond Jamaica and collaborations with artists including Drake, Pusha T, Travis Scott and others. His official biography describes an international touring history spanning Europe, the Caribbean, the UAE and South America. (officialpopcaan.com)....No Africa yet. The promoter credentials of The Vybz Fest team, whoever they are, show a list of past shows that have all come to be. So we know when they announce a name, good times will be upon us either way.

And yet, despite the artist’s connection with African audiences, Kenya remains an interesting gap.

There is currently no publicly announced Kenya date on the major concert listings we checked.

Which brings us back to Vybz Fest.

Is the festival simply teasing fans? Their new promo video has heavy dancehall imagery with him and his songs but that doesn’t really mean anything, does it?

Is Popcaan actually being lined up for Nairobi?

The Axlerator has not been able to independently confirm that Popcaan is booked for Vybz Fest but twitter sleuths who tend to know more than the rest have mention Popcaan and March in the same sentence,

There is enough smoke around the story to make the question worth asking.

And if the answer eventually turns out to be yes, it would mean something rather amazing:

Kenya has been waiting for Popcaan for a very, very long time.

Maybe 2027 is finally the year.

Popcaan finally coming to Kenya?

We’re watching this one.
